Crunchyroll Adds 3 ‘Hakuoki’ Anime to Streaming Library


On Wednesday, Crunchyroll expanded its anime library by adding three titles from the Hakuoki franchise: Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, its sequel Hakuōki: Record of the Jade Blood, and the prequel Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom – Dawn of the Shinsengumi.

The original Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom television anime made its debut in April 2010, consisting of 12 episodes. Following its success, Hakuōki: Record of the Jade Blood continued the saga with 10 episodes premiering in October 2010. Additionally, the prequel Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom – Dawn of the Shinsengumi aired in July 2012, spanning 12 episodes.

Furthermore, in December 2021, Crunchyroll expanded its offerings with the addition of the franchise’s “Hakuōki (OAV 2021)” anime to its platform, available for users across North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and the CIS.

The Hakuoki franchise originates from Idea Factory’s Otomate brand, known for its romance game series. Set in the historical backdrop of Kyoto during the 19th century, both the game franchise and its anime adaptations delve into the captivating narrative surrounding the renowned Shinsengumi samurai group.

Several games from the franchise have been localized and released in English by Aksys Games and Idea Factory International, further broadening its reach and popularity among international audiences.

About Hakuoki Franchise

The franchise originated with the release of the first game, Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, in 2008 for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). This visual novel game follows the protagonist’s journey amid the turbulent era of the Shinsengumi, a revered samurai group in Kyoto during the late Edo period.

Over the years, the series expanded with various sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, each offering unique perspectives and storylines within the universe. Notable entries include Hakuoki: Record of the Jade Blood and Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds, among others.

Set against the backdrop of Kyoto during the tumultuous Bakumatsu period, the Hakuoki franchise delves into the trials and tribulations of the iconic Shinsengumi samurai group.
