About Edens Zero

Edens Zero is a Japanese sci-fi manga created by Hiro Mishima. The series has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine since June 2018. The chapters were compiled into twenty-nine volumes of manga as of November 2023.

The series is published simultaneously in seven languages: English, French, Chinese, Korean, Tahi, German, and Brazilian Portuguese. Kodansha USA licensed the series outside Japan and released it on several digital platforms such as Crunchyroll Manga and Amazon Kindle. But, the publishing ended in January 2023.

Then, the platform was replaced with a new app service “K Manga” in May 2023. This new platform is available for Android, with a full website for a later date.

With the popularity of the manga, J.C. Staff announced its anime adaptation. The first season aired from April to October 2021. Meanwhile, the second season premiered two years later from April to October 2023.

Not only that, the series also released video games. Konami announced that they are developing two separate action RPGs, one being a 3D game for consoles, and the other for mobile devices. In February 2022, Konami released the mobile version game entitled Edens Zero Pocket Galaxy. It is available for iOS and Android. On the other hand, 3D game for consoles is still TBA.

Cast and Staff

The second season of Edens Zero runs from April 2 to October 1, 2023. Just like the first season, J.C. Staff is the one who made it. Unfortunately, the director of the series went through a change after Yuuji Suzuki passed away before the first season of Eden Zero concluded.

Now, Shinji Ishihira and Toshinori Watanabe have taken the rein of the director. Mitsutaka Hirota is in charge of the series composition, while Shunya Kikuchi will work on character design. Shouji Hata is serving as sound director.

Edens Zero Season 2 Impression

Edens Zero is undoubtedly one of the underrated anime series. To be fair, it is one of the best adventure anime in 2023. Hiro Mishima cleverly built an interesting world and doesn’t shy away from dark themes.

Looking at the story, it is well-paced though it is on the slower end. But, compared to the first season, it is so much more bearable because the story progresses through each episode. You can also see the character development throughout the series. The defining feature is that they don’t get stronger in one go but through several trials and tribulations.

Though the story is impressive, the graphics are still left to be desired. Sure, J.C. Staff has done a great job of making Edens Zero have a similar impression to Fairy Tale. But, they need to make the battle scene more animated.

Moving on, the sound used in this anime is great. The studio cleverly adjusts the background music to fit in each atmosphere. There is no feeling of music misplaced after watching the entire season of Edens Zero.

Overall, Edens Zero Season 2 is arguably better than the first season. Unfortunately, this weekly Shonen Jump series has become so underrated that no one talks about it. But, with the manga still going strong, there is a chance that this anime will be fully animated like its predecessor, Fairy Tale.

Story

Now that Shiki owns Edens Zero, he has gathered the four shining stars. With their help, finally, he can break through Dragonfall – the border of the Sakura Cosmos swarming with mechanical dragons. After that, he can continue his quest to find Mother.

But, a mysterious warship follows them before they can advance their journey. It turns out that Drakken Joe owns the warship – Belial Gore. Upon learning that a notorious criminal is following them, they decide to infiltrate to find out why he is after them. While most of them are on the mission, Drakken’s subordinate breaches Edens Zero and takes it hostage.

While the situation turns sour, Shiki refuses to back down. With the help of his friends, Shiki should defeat the dark alchemist to leave Belial Gore alive.

Conclusion

Edens Zero tells a story about a grand exciting adventure through the cosmos. Unlike its predecessor Fairy Tale, the scope of world-building is so vast to the point that we visit one planet in each arc. But, it still doesn’t have Fairy Tale popularity yet. Fair to say, that Edens Zero is one of the most underrated anime this year.

But, don’t let it stop you from joining Shiki’s journey to find Mother. With an interesting and well-developed story, this anime has the potential to be Hiro Mishima’s best work. If the third season is happening, we will enter Nero 66 Arc which is the peak of the manga.

But will it deserve the third season? Well, maybe it will take time. The gap between the first season and the second season is exactly two years. So, we can expect the third season to drop in 2025. Well, just stay tuned for future anime news in Animefleek!
