Ooku: The Inner Chambers Official Trailer Released

On Tuesday, Netflix started streaming a teaser with English subtitles for the anime adaptation of Ooku: The Inner Chambers by Fumi Yoshinaga. The anime’s global premiere date on Netflix is June 29.

Although, the manga by Fumi Yoshinaga, published by Hakusensha, that appeared in Melody from 2004 to 2020 is the inspiration for the film Ooku: the Inner Chambers. The show also has a trailer and key visuals available.

Now that the official trailer has been out, we can officially confirm that Ooku: The Inner Chambers will be available on Netflix on Monday, June 29, 2023. The trailer of the show is shown below:

Above all, the anime is being produced by Studio Deen under the direction of Noriyuki Abe (Arad: Gyakuten no Wa, Kochoki: Wakaki Nobunaga), with Rika Takasugi serving as the series composer and screenplay, Youko Satou (Love of Kill) as the character designer, and Kenji Kawai (The Fire Hunter) as the soundtrack composer.

Ooku: The Inner Chambers Plot

Viz Media publishes the manga in English, and it describes the story:

“In Edo period Japan, a strange new disease called the Red Pox has begun to prey on the country’s men. Within eighty years of the first outbreak, the male population has fallen by seventy-five percent.

Women have taken on all the roles traditionally granted to men, even that of the Shogun. The men, precious providers of life, are carefully protected. And the most beautiful of the men are sent to serve in the Shogun’s Inner Chamber…”

Ooku: The Inner Chambers Manga

In 2004, Yoshinaga began the manga, which he finished in December 2020, in Hakusensha’s Melody magazine. In February 2021, Hakusensha released the manga’s 19th and last volume, and in March 2022, Viz Media released the final volume in English.

The manga received the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the James Tiptree, Jr. Award in 2009. Besides, the 56th Shogakukan Manga Prize in the shojo category, the 5th Sense of Gender Prize’s Special Award, and most recently, the Grand Prize at the 42nd Nihon SF Taisha Awards are among its numerous distinctions.

Altogether, the manga was adapted into a live-action movie in 2010, a live-action TV show called “Ooku: Arikoto” Iemitsu Hen in October 2012, and a second live-action movie called “Ooku: Eien – Emonnosuke” Tsunayoshi Hen in December of the same year.

Besides on January 10, a brand-new live-action series on NHK made its debut. It will have a second season this autumn.
