Non-Japanese Nationals Now Banned in Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournaments

Konami has updated the rules for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Japan Championship 2024, stipulating that only Japanese citizens residing in the country will be permitted to participate. This marks a departure from the regulations of the previous year’s championship, which allowed individuals with a permanent address in Japan, regardless of nationality.

The preliminary rounds for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Japan Championship 2024 commenced on March 1 and will continue until March 31, with the second stage scheduled for May 1-31. The top performers from these rounds will advance to the finals, set to take place in mid-July. The top four finalists will represent Japan at the prestigious Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2024 event, slated to be held in Seattle, WA on September 7-8. This global tournament incorporates special rules that merge the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game, primarily distributed in the East including Japan, with the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, which is predominant in the Western markets.

Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1996 to 2004, Kazuki Takahashi’s Yu-Gi-Oh! manga has spawned a highly successful franchise encompassing card games, anime, merchandise, and subsequent manga iterations.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!!, the eighth main anime series within the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, made its debut in April 2022 and is set to enter its third year of broadcast come April.
