Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Manga Goes On Hiatus for One Month

The 16th issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, released on Wednesday, announced that Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe’s manga Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sōsō no Frieren) will be taking a hiatus until the magazine’s 21st issue in mid-April.

Yamada and Abe began serializing the manga in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in April 2020. After a previous hiatus, the series resumed serialization in March 2023. The manga’s first compiled book volume was published by Shogakukan in August 2020, and the 13th volume is scheduled for release on April 17. Viz Media released the English version of the 10th volume on February 20. Since the anime’s debut, the manga has seen an increase of 7 million copies in circulation, bringing the total to over 17 million.

The manga has received several awards, including the New Creator Prize at the 25th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2021 and the 14th Manga Taisho Award in the same year. Additionally, it was nominated for Best Shōnen Manga at Kodansha’s 45th and 46th annual Manga Awards in 2021 and 2022 respectively. The American Library Association’s Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT) recognized the manga in its top 10 list of the 2022 Best Graphic Novels for Adults Reading List.

VIZ Media publishes the manga in English and describes the series as follows:

Elf mage Frieren and her courageous fellow adventurers have defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land. But Frieren will long outlive the rest of her former party. How will she come to understand what life means to the people around her? Decades after their victory, the funeral of one her friends confronts Frieren with her own near immortality. Frieren sets out to fulfill the last wishes of her comrades and finds herself beginning a new adventure…”
