The Sailor Moon Franchise
A manga by Naoko Takeuchi served as the inspiration for the Sailor Moon series. From 1991 through 1997, the manga appeared in serial form in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine. The Toei Animation adaptation of an anime series debuted in 1992 and ran through 1997:
- Sailor Moon (1992–93)
- Sailor Moon R (1993–94)
- Sailor Moon S (1994–95)
- Sailor Moon SuperS (1995–96)
- Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (1996–97)
The franchise produced numerous films, OVAs, specials, and a live-action television series called Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon in addition to the TV anime. 2014 saw the beginnings of a second anime adaptation, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal. It was a manga adaptation that more closely adhered to the manga’s plot.
The first two seasons adapted the Dark Kingdom and Black Moon arcs, while the third season tackled the Death Busters (also known as Infinity) arc. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie, which was released in two parts, carried on the plot. The movie Eternal has a sequel, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos.
