First Haikyuu!! Final Film Hits #1 in the Japanese Box Office, Gundam Seed FREEDOM at #2

The first of the Haikyu!! Final sequel film project titled Gekijōban Haikyu!! Gomi Suteba no Kessen (Haikyu!! the Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump) hit number 1 in the Japanese box office on its opening weekend as it sold 1,529,00 tickets earning 2,230,465,540 yen ($14.83 million USD) in just three days of screening.

With the film currently at #1, the hit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film is now ranked at #2. The Haikyuu!! Final film premiered on Friday and will also be screen in IMAX theaters in Japan. It was announced previously in August 2022 that the film will have two part. The first part of the film will depict the “fated showdown” between the two teams Nekoma High and Karasuno High.

The Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime is at #2 on its fourth weekend. It sold 160, 104 tickets earning 318, 026, yen ($2.12 million USD) on the mentioned week. Overall, the film has sold 1,869,442 tickets earning 3,126,307,990 yen ($20.84 million USD) so far. The film is currently screening in 353 cinemas in Japan with Dolby, 4DX, MX4D screenings added in early February.

 The film is currently the highest-earning film in the Gundam franchise beating Gundam III: Encounters in Space.

The first top-grossing film in the Gundam franchise is Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, the third of the compilation film series of the Mobile Suit Gundam TV anime series. The film earned 2.3 billion yen (15.5 million USD) in the box office in 1982.

The Japanese website Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM describes the movie as follows:

“Cosmic Era (C.E.)

An era where a genetically engineered humankind with enhanced brains and strength (Coordinators), and naturally born humankind (Naturals) exist together.

A war had previously raged on between the Coordinator and the Naturals in a clash of ideals in regards to their own self beings

During the time, the Destiny Plan had been brought up which would may have created a world without war, but each individuals would be forcibly given a role to play.

To protect the humanity’s freedom to choose their future and hope, the Destiny Plan was rejected in the battle.

With many sacrifices, the war had ended.

However despite so, conflict and hate between the two humankind still continue to happen throughout the world.”

There is still no word yet as to when the movie will be screening in other regions.
