An Overview of In Another World with My Smartphone

The Isekai series follows Mochizuki Touya, a 15-year-old boy who wakes up face-to-face with God after dying from a lightning strike, truly a freak accident. God acknowledges that killing Touya was a mistake. After dying due to God’s error, the main character awakens in a parallel universe to begin his second life. His only assets are the body God restored to him and a smartphone that still functions in this new world. He discovers the key to this realm as he meets various individuals and forms lasting friendships. On his leisurely adventures and carefree travels in this unfamiliar world, he inherits the legacy of an ancient civilization and works with the kings of some very laid-back kingdoms.

So Touya’s journey begins in a strange medieval world. He embarks on a trip of wonder as he wanders from place to place, discovering fantasy races, and following whatever aim catches his eye. The curtains have been drawn back on an epic story of swords, sorcery, and smartphone apps!

Fuyuhara launched the In Another World With My Smartphone book series in 2013 on the “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” website, and Hobby Japan’s Novels label publishes the Japanese novels in print, with artwork by Eiji Usatsuka. Soto released a manga adaptation in 2016, and Yen Press is publishing it in English.

In Another World With My Smartphone’s first anime adaptation season premiered in July 2017 and lasted 12 episodes. While the series aired in Japan, Crunchyroll streamed it in Japanese with English subtitles, and Funimation streamed an English version. Anime distributor Crunchyroll will handle all aspects of streaming similarly for the second season.

The intense finale of season 1 ended with a cliffhanger that merely teases what is truly going on in that realm. The first season of the anime may have been too focused on harem hijinks and overpowering isekai clichés. However, Season 2 of In Another World With My Smartphone will kick up the pace dramatically, as the light novel series has incorporated robot mecha fights. The plot will also become more intriguing now that Babylon and a global threat have been revealed.

If you have a fondness for anime like isekai harem anime, you should watch the entire first season of In Another World With My Smartphone in a variety of subs and dubs before the sequel airs in April 2023. Stay tuned for more anime updates!
