In this week’s 18th issue of Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine, it was announced on Monday that Tohru Fujisawa’s GTO: Paradise Lost manga will resume serialization on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket website under the new title GTO: Paradise Lost Kai (GTO: Paradise Lost Renewed) starting this Monday.
The manga had previously gone on hiatus in February 2023 with plans to return in the summer of the same year, but the serialization did not resume as scheduled.
In September 2023, Fujisawa took to Twitter to explain that the manga had been put on hiatus “after being removed from the magazine midway through its serialization.” He also mentioned considering transferring the copyright to another publisher.
GTO: Paradise Lost, a spinoff of Fujisawa’s GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) manga, debuted in Weekly Young Magazine in April 2014. Kodansha released the manga’s 20th compiled volume in November 2022.
Previously, Crunchyroll offered the manga online, releasing the latest chapters alongside its Japanese publication. However, the company discontinued offering catalog chapters in 2018 and ended its Crunchyroll Manga service in December of the same year. Currently, Kodansha USA Publishing handles digital English releases, with the 20th volume hitting shelves in March 2023.
In North America, Tokyopop and Vertical have published various other GTO manga titles, including GTO: The Early Years. The original manga has inspired a television anime and several live-action adaptations. Additionally, GTO: The Early Years led to a new live-action series adaptation in February 2020.
Fujisawa had previously mentioned in 2021 that GTO: Paradise Lost is intended to be the “final” installment in the GTO series.
