Last Monday, January 22nd, Adult Swim’s official YouTube channel started streaming a fresh English trailer for the forthcoming Ninja Kamui anime. This also reaffirmed its February 2024 release date. The roughly 2-minute long preview focuses on laying out the plot for the series. It also exhibited that it will be a brutal and merciless action show. The new anime series comes from Jujutsu Kaisen director Sunghoo Park.
The original story follows Joe Higan. He is a former ninja who is nearly assassinated by his clan after escaping to rural America with his family. Following an attempt on his life, Joe resumes his identity as “Ninja Kamui” to embark on a mission to avenge his family. It appears similar to John Wick but with ninjas rather than hitmen, and it looks exhilarating.
Ninja Kamui Anime Trailer
Additionally, the latest Ninja Kamui anime official trailer saw Adult Swim reconfirm its plan to air the series. It will air it with both its English dub and the original Japanese audio with subtitles. The English dubbed version will premiere first, with the Japanese language release set to debut three hours after the dub. Both formats will stream on the Max service the next day.
The original series will premiere on Adult Swim during their Saturday Toonami programming block. It will broadcast on February 10 at midnight, Eastern Standard Time, which is also effectively Sunday, February 11. The English dub will debut first at midnight, followed by the Japanese audio version with English subtitles at 3 AM EST.
The roughly 2-minute long preview for the Ninja Kamui anime begins by establishing the introduction of its main character, Joe Higan. He is a former ninja seeking revenge for his family’s murder. The rest of the trailer primarily features Joe on his quest for vengeance. Additionally, there is a voiceover that outlines how his enemies are a formidable and covert organization allied with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Ninja Kamui’s Plot
Ninja Kamui centers around Joe Higan, a Nukenin – a former ninja who long ago escaped from his merciless clan. He has been hiding from his violent past in the tranquility of rural America. There, he lives peacefully with his wife and daughter, having turned his back on the cutthroat ways of his former ninja brethren.
However, one fateful night, a deadly team of skilled assassins from Joe’s former ninja clan infiltrate his home and ambush his family. These heartless killers exact an unrelenting, bloody retribution on Joe and his loved ones. They see it as punishment for what they see as his betrayal of their ancient code and also way of life.
Rising from the ashes of his family’s slaughter, Joe reemerges as his former ninja alter ego – Ninja Kamui. Fueled by rage and also a simmering desire for vengeance, Kamui sets out on a personal mission to avenge his murdered wife and daughter. He tries dismantling the very ninja clan that created him and forced him into a life of violence. Kamui is a 21st-century ninja, a shadowy anachronism who expertly pits his honed ancient skills against high-tech weaponry and modern combat techniques. He does it with calculated ruthlessness and finesse. However, to fulfill his vow of retribution, he must face off against a gauntlet of trained assassins, lethally augmented cyborgs, and rival ninjas who stand in the way. He has a goal in mind: to bring down the clan that made him the proficient fighter he is today.
With its gripping premise set in a modernized ninja realm that starkly contrasts mysticism and tradition with contemporary warfare, Ninja Kamui will deliver an electrifying anime viewing experience unlike anything seen before when it premieres.
About Ninja Kamui’s Production
The Ninja Kamui anime series is a wholly original production from Adult Swim and Sunghoo Park. This means there is no preceding source material for fans to reference leading up to its premiere. However, it has been announced that the series is getting a video game adaptation called Ninja Kamui: Shinobi Origins. It will come out in the Spring of 2024.
Sunghoo Park (Jujutsu Kaisen, The God of High School) is directing the anime at his new studio E&H Production. It was founded in 2021 during the production of Jujutsu Kaisen season 1 and the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film. They will work with the studio Sola Entertainment (Lord of The Rings: War of The Rohirrim, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Ultraman). Both studios are producing the series. Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai, Star Wars: Visions, Batman Ninja) is taking care of the character designs.
In 2022, Park left MAPPA, the studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen, to work full-time at E&H Production. Director Shōta Goshozono took over Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season following Park’s departure. He previously worked as an episode director on Ranking of Kings and Chainsaw Man.
With its original premise and top-tier creative talent behind the scenes, Ninja Kamui is shaping up to be one of 2024’s most hotly anticipated anime releases. Fans eager for a fresh take on the ninja genre will surely be intrigued by this brutal tale of revenge when it hits screens next month. With the accompanying video game on the way, Kamui’s World has the potential to become the next big multimedia franchise. Whether you’re a fan of director Sunghoo Park’s previous works or just love over-the-top anime action, keep an eye out for Ninja Kamui’s premiere. This modern ninja saga is ready to slink its way into the spotlight. Stay tuned for more anime updates!
