How do you Live? Movie Plot

HOW DO YOU LIVE? Basically focuses on fifteen-year-old Copper, who recently lost his father, as he looks out over his hometown of Tokyo, watches the throngs of people below, and starts to reflect on life’s big concerns.

Who lives in the world today? How do they conduct their lives? Do molecules actually make up people?

The narrative of the book alternates between Copper’s account and his uncle’s diary entries, in which he offers guidance and teaches Copper important truths about how the world functions.

Like his namesake Copernicus, Copper spends a year of his life seeking intellectual enlightenment. He uses what he learns about the skies, the planet, and human nature to select the best course of action.

As Copper explores the city on his bike and learns from friends and family what really counts in life, Yoshino masterfully evokes the beauty and oddity of pre-war Japan, including the changing seasons, the fried tofu and taiyaki vendors, and the lush scenery.
